The Hamsa Bali Resort

Canyoning Near Lovina
Discover the hidden hearth of north Bali

Lovina is famous for its dolphins, peaceful beaches and spectacular sunsets. These experiences are an essential part of any stay in North Bali, but they reveal only one side of the region.

Less than one hour from the coast, the landscape changes completely.

The sea disappears behind the mountains. The road enters a world of tropical forest, volcanic rock, rivers and waterfalls. Hidden inside this landscape are natural canyons that most visitors will never see from a traditional walking trail.

Canyoning offers a rare opportunity to enter this hidden side of Bali.

From The Hamsa Bali Resort, you can leave at 7 a.m. and reach the Gitgit canyoning area in approximately 50 minutes. There, the Adventure & Spirit team will guide you through waterfalls, natural pools and tropical gorges inaccessible to ordinary visitors.

It is one of the most memorable adventure activities near Lovina, and one of the best ways to understand just how diverse North Bali really is.

What is canyoning ?

Canyoning consists of travelling through a river, stream or natural gorge using different techniques adapted to the landscape.

During a canyoning experience, you may walk through the jungle, swim across natural pools, descend waterfalls using ropes, slide down smooth sections of volcanic rock and complete optional jumps into the water.

The objective is not simply to reach the end of the canyon. It is to experience the landscape from inside it.

Instead of looking at a waterfall from a viewpoint, you descend beside it. Instead of walking around a gorge, you progress through its centre. Every section reveals another part of Bali’s natural environment.

With professional guidance and a canyon adapted to your abilities, canyoning can be discovered by beginners as well as experienced adventurers.

Adventure & Spirit :
Professional canyoning in Bali

The activity is organised by Adventure & Spirit, also known as the Bali Canyoning Team.

The company has played a pioneering role in the development of canyoning in Indonesia. Its trips are supervised by ICOpro-certified instructors and assistants, and participants receive an introductory training session before entering the canyon.

The guides explain how to use the equipment, how to descend safely on a rope and how to communicate with the team. They also monitor the weather, water levels and canyon conditions throughout the experience.

Canyoning takes place in a natural mountain environment and can never be considered completely without risk. For this reason, participants must follow the guides’ instructions at all times. The team may modify, shorten or interrupt a descent whenever conditions require it.

Complete technical equipment is provided, including a helmet, wetsuit, canyoning shoes, socks and harness. The package also includes accident insurance, with coverage announced by the operator up to 150,000,000 IDR per participant. This activity insurance does not replace personal travel, medical or repatriation insurance.

Explore a different side of North Bali

North Bali is often associated with the sea, dolphin watching and the black-sand beaches of Lovina. However, only a short distance inland, the landscape rises towards some of the island’s most beautiful mountain areas.

Gitgit is known for its waterfalls, rivers and dense tropical vegetation. Water flowing through volcanic terrain has created narrow gorges, natural pools and hidden corridors that are perfect for canyoning.

These places are difficult, or sometimes impossible, to reach without technical equipment and an experienced local team.

Canyoning therefore offers much more than an adrenaline-filled activity. It is a way to enter landscapes that remain protected from conventional mass tourism and to experience Bali from a completely different perspective.

The Hamsa Resort Bali

Your base for exploring
North of Bali

The Hamsa Bali Resort is more than a place to sleep near Lovina.

Our team brings together Balinese local knowledge and a French approach to hospitality. We want our guests to experience the best that Bali has to offer—not only its beaches, but also its culture, mountain landscapes, local communities and natural adventures.

From dolphin watching at sunrise to canyoning beneath hidden waterfalls, The Hamsa allows you to experience several different sides of North Bali while returning each evening to a quiet resort overlooking the sea.

Our reception team can help you select the most appropriate canyon, organise your reservation and coordinate transportation directly from the hotel.

Kalimudah :
the ideal first canyoning experience

For guests trying canyoning for the first time, we recommend Kalimudah Canyon.

Located in the Gitgit area of North Bali, Kalimudah is accessible throughout the year and has been designed as an enjoyable introduction to canyoning. It combines adventure, beautiful scenery and accessible technical challenges.

The canyon descent lasts approximately two to three hours. After a short approach walk, participants progress through a succession of waterfalls, natural pools and plant-covered volcanic rock.

The experience can include:

  • rappels of up to 15 metres;
  • swimming through natural pools;
  • a natural water slide;
  • short climbing-down sections;
  • optional jumps, including one of up to five metres;
  • a zipline section, depending on conditions;
  • natural warm-water basins.

Kalimudah requires an average level of fitness rather than advanced athletic ability. Participants must be in good health and able to swim approximately 25 metres. The minimum age announced by Adventure & Spirit is 12 years old.

This makes Kalimudah particularly suitable for couples, groups of friends and families travelling with teenagers.

Guests looking for a more technical or physically demanding experience can ask The Hamsa reception team for the complete Adventure & Spirit brochure. Other canyons are available for different levels, from playful aquatic descents to full-day expeditions involving long rappels and more demanding progression.

Upon arrival at the base camp, the team welcomes you and completes the participant registration.

A light breakfast is served before the activity. This is also the opportunity to meet the guides and the other members of your canyoning group.

When making the reservation, each participant must provide their name, age, height, weight, shoe size, dietary requirements and any relevant medical information.

Meeting the Adventure & Spirit team

On the day of the activity, Rama is responsible for the operational organisation and coordination of the canyoning team.

The guides will present the day’s programme, check that the chosen canyon is appropriate for every participant and answer any final questions.

Equipment and introductory training

The team provides all the necessary canyoning equipment.

You will receive:

  • a wetsuit;
  • technical canyoning shoes and socks;
  • a helmet;
  • a canyoning harness;
  • all required ropes and safety equipment.

Before entering the canyon, participants complete an approximately 30-minute ICOpro introduction. The guides explain the essential rope techniques, body positions and communication signals used during the descent.

No previous canyoning experience is required for Kalimudah.

Entering the canyon

After the equipment session, the group is transferred to the canyon access point.

A short walk of approximately ten minutes leads to the beginning of the descent. From this moment, the surrounding roads and villages disappear behind the vegetation.

For the next two to three hours, you move through the heart of the canyon.

The guides install and control the rope descents, help participants through the aquatic sections and adapt each technical passage to the group. The larger jump is optional, and alternative progression can be used when appropriate.

Between the waterfalls, you swim through natural pools, walk over volcanic rock and discover areas of the forest that cannot be seen from above.

Lunch, photos and return to The Hamsa

At the end of the descent, a short return walk brings the group back towards the base camp.

You can shower, change clothes and enjoy a vegetarian or vegan lunch. Snacks, tea, coffee and drinking-water refills are also included.

The team provides photos and video memories of the experience, subject to the conditions of the selected trip.

After lunch, the shared vehicle takes you back to The Hamsa, where you can relax by the pool, enjoy the panoramic sea view or book a massage after your adventure.

Return times can vary according to traffic, group size, weather and the speed of progression through the canyon.
